First-time claims for state unemployment benefits plunged by 36,000 to a seasonally adjusted 271,000 in the week ended Jan. 14, the Labor Department said Thursday.


This marked the lowest level for initial claims since mid-April 2000.


The four-week average of new claims also fell, down by 12,000 to 299,000 last week, the lowest since mid-October 2000.
