Due in part to 2003′s Medicare Modernization Act, hospitals can apply for federal reimbursement for the first 48 hours of emergency care provided to illegal immigrants.
The program, which has some $250 million in reserve, has gotten off to a slow start, according to the Dallas Business Journal. There are a lot of hoops involved, including the quick turnaround necessary in filing and submitting. Because of this, many first-time allocations have been higher than they will be in the future. Costs are tallied quarterly, and the amounts awarded to hospitals are determined based on the ratio of its claims to the total claims pool.
