First Data Corp., parent company of the money transfer service Western Union, laid off 1,000 workers Friday, or about 3 percent of its work force.


The credit card transaction services company said it would take a restructuring charge of about 5 cents a share in the fourth-quarter as a result of the job cuts, which were effective immediately.
