Florida debt collectors had another weapon from their arsenal taken away, this time by Governor Jeb Bush, according to a story running in the St. Petersberg Times. Time was, a debt collector could use technology that could disguise everything from telephone numbers that appear on caller ID to a caller?s voice. After Gov. Bush put his John Hancock on a measure that forbids that tactic, however, that time is now no more.



“This is just one more use of modern technology to take advantage of consumers by hiding one’s identity to scam them or get access to consumers who otherwise might not answer the phone,” Florida Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson said in a statement last week. “There is no legitimate reason for a telemarketer to use this service.”



Debt collectors would argue, however, that dishonest and hard-to-pin-down debtors make the technology a necessity in tracking down owers
