Visa USA announced yesterday that its cardholders spent $1.23 trillion last year on their cards, according to Reuters. The total represents a 17.5 increase from 2004 volume, with the bulk of the growth coming from online transactions.


Visa aso reported that it had 510.9 million cards in the U.S. alone, a 12% increase from the previous year.


Credit card sales represented the largest segment of the $1.23 trillion total accounting for $563.5 billion, an 8.6% increase. Check and debit card volume rose 18.7% to $410.5 billion.
